World Cup Fever

FIFA World Cup 2010 – S.K. went soccer-crazy. There were commercials on television, posters, etc. I should have expected this though – afterall, this was the year of Kim Yuna (and I saw her so much on t.v. that I worried she might also start appearing in my dreams too). Here is the official song/mv if you’re interested; it is rather catchy and all my students were randomly singing it in class. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDXUJzUtOSU

But as you know, S.K. lost its match against Uruguay — talk about major disappointment. The kids were bummed. I was more even more disappointed though because I stayed up to watch the U.S. game after watching the Korean game. The U.S. game started around 3:30 am, enough said.

On a random note, I had a really interesting KFC sandwich today. It was a spicy chicken sandwich with ketchup, mayo, lettuce, and hash brown! I was kind of surprised by the hash brown — it was exactly the same type of hash brown you could buy at McD’s for the breakfast meals — in other words unhealthy but wonderfully tasty. I bit into the sandwich and was like: “what in the….is this hash brown? With spicy chicken? yay~~” It was pretty good. But then again, who doesn’t like hash browns? Trust me though, I consider this a fairly normal meal – I’ve had far stranger. Like how I am always frustrated with their fruit salads where mayo is the main component. It is like the fruit can not be by itself, it should be mixed with copious amounts of mayo – with some corn thrown in for good measure. You’re eating it going: “hmmm, apple, banana, kiwi, raisin…..corn, mayo? why?”

Sports Day

Everyone lining up in their teams

Guys acting cute~

Well, I was out-of commission for some time – but now I’m back with an update! 🙂

June 1 was an all-day sports event for the students. It is the U.S. equivalent of field day. And I was more than a little pleased about it — afterall, it meant no teaching (hooray!). Of course, there were the sports I am familiar with, like: tug-of-war and soccer but there was also additional activities that were new to me (or old games with a different twist). For example, they had a game where one student held another student off the ground (piggy-back style) for as long as possible — who ever lasted the longest, won. And of course, it wouldn’t be a Korean festival without a dance-off — all the teams elected students in their groups to perform a coordinated dance (usually to current hit pop-songs) in front of judges. All in all, everyone (including the students) had a really good time. The only downside — it was super hot that day. I really pitied the kids when they were doing the relays and hard exercise — they were sweating bullets. Additionally, a whole lot of kids got a bit banged up (unsurprising) and for awhile, I was helping out with the wounded — handing out bandaids etc. Joyous. ha ha

That’s all 4 now. Will update with more “interesting” stuff next Monday.
